Sola – 500 Years later
On this Tuesday our world celebrates an event that changed Europe, organized religion, and the rest of the world to this very day. It is when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the chapel in Wittenberg, Germany. Out of that event grew a cry of 5 statements of faith that rocked organized religion of that day. Let’s refresh our minds to these teaching, and remember what they mean to us and our faith. Scripture Alone No pope, magisterium, tradition to over-ride the authority of the Bible. 2 Peter 1:20,21 2 Timothy 3:16,17 Today: Literal- Grammatical- Historical or Genre – Override Salvation by Grace Alone To extend favor to one who doesn’t deserve it and can never earn it. Justified by Faith Alone Faith – belief, trust Justified – God declaring sinners something they are intrinsically and ethically not 2 Corinthians 5:21 Romans 5:1,2 New Perspective – NP - future justification based on works Christ Alone for Salvation 1 Timothy 2:5,6 1 John 4:14 John 14:6 Not Mary, saints, church, sacraments, or any other means The Glory of God Alone 1 Corinthians 10:31 1 Peter 4:11 God alone is sovereign over every aspect of a believer’s life Big Idea:
